Application and hide type
Rehydration of dried or salted hides
Substantially reduces soaking time
This product breaks down soluble proteins inside the hide matrix. That allows for the removal of hyaluronic acid, salt and dirt so there's more room for water. This product also opens up the collagen structure to water. These effects can substantially cut tanneries' soaking times.
Reduces chemical usage
Conventional rehydration uses surfactants of varying biodegradability. This product allows tanneries to use less surfactant in their rehydration processes.
Improves rewetting uniformity
By breaking down soluble proteins and opening up the collagen structure, this product makes the hide more accessible to water. That supports efficient water uptake and improves the rewetting uniformity of hides.
Fully biodegradable
This product is both biodegradable and renewable. That means it has minimal environmental impact.
Soaking is the process of restoring water to dry-salted raw hide stock. It's a crucial step in the leather-making process. If it's not done well, it can lead to problems later in the process. These include hair slip, longer processing times and more need for surfactants/tensides. Poor soaking can also lead to non-uniformity in the final leather product.
Modern soaking processes generally use readily biodegradable proteases. The result is reduced surfactant use and a better working environment. Proteases also deliver energy savings. That's because they can substantially reduce soaking times.
Proteins consist of polypeptide chains of amino acids linked by peptide bonds. Proteases break down these bonds. In that way, they break down unwanted proteins inside the hide matrix. That 'frees' salt, hyaluronic acid, fats, oils and dirt from the matrix and makes room for water. It also improves wetting uniformity. Proteases with an optimal pH of 9–10 are suitable for soaking process conditions.
Many tanneries boost the benefits of proteases by combining them with lipases in soaking. Lipases break down fats and oils. Proteases break down the membranes that surround fat cells. So proteases make the fat accessible to the lipase. This synergistic action improves fat dispersion.
Tanneries can easily incorporate proteases in their soaking processes by adjusting pH to 9.5 with organic or earth alkalis.
