The oat milk market
continues to cash in

The oat-based milk category has grown rapidly in the past three years. Just last year, 30 new oat-based beverages hit the shelves in the U.S (Mintel).

This increase in new oat-based beverage launches is not unexpected considering that U.S. retail sales of oat milk went from $4.4 million in 2017 to a whopping $29 million in 2019.

With this leap in sales and increase in launches, oat milk has surpassed almond as the fastest-growing plant-based milk alternative in the U.S., while almonds are still leading as best-selling plant-based milk.

On a global scale, the oat beverage market was valued at $360.5 million in 2019 and is projected to be worth $995.3 million in 2027, registering an annual growth rate of 13.4% from 2021-2027.

Oat milk is a consumer favorite

Oat milk is a consumer favorite

In a 2020-Novozymes study, 50% of U.S. respondents said that they are willing to substitute traditional dairy milk to plant-based milk alternatives. 39% expected to consume more plant-based dairy alternatives in the future.

Similarly, the Good Food Institute (GFI) reports that 75% of U.S. consumers who buy plant milks buy them again.

Plant-based milk is the most developed of all the plant-based food categories. And within it, oat milk is the fastest growing beverage.

Consumers seem to be growing fonder of oat milk, which, according to our study, is only second to almond milk when it comes to U.S. consumer preference for plant-based milk.

What’s driving the plant-based milk trend?

What’s driving the plant-based milk trend?

In a recent Novozymes survey, 58% of respondents said they choose plant milk for health reasons, and it’s expected that health and wellness will play a role in growing this segment over the next few years.

Sustainability and the rise of the flexitarian is another driver. According to Plant-Based News, more than half of Americans aged 25-39 consider themselves flexitarian. Oat milk is the perfect choice for the environmentally conscious flexitarian since it’s one of the most sustainable dairy alternatives compared to other alternatives like almond or coconut.

A perhaps surprising driver for the plant-based milk trend is storage. With the looming possibility for potential future lockdowns, consumers are buying more food in bulk, and plant-based milk is easy to store since it doesn’t require a refrigerator and can be kept for long before consuming.

Why oat milk is the
sustainable choice

While plant-based milks are generally considered more sustainable than traditional dairy milk, some plant-based milk alternatives are more resource-demanding than others.

Oats are easy to grow in many places around the world and is the less resource intensive alternative. That’s not only compared to other plant-based milks, but also compared to dairy milk. In fact, oat milk emits one third less CO2 in production than dairy milk.

With 58% of Americans willing to pay more for sustainable products, sustainable plant-based solutions present an opportunity for brands who have not yet tapped into the category.

Achieve excellent texture in oat milk

Oats are a rewarding substrate to work with when you’re developing plant-based milk alternatives. But one key factor for oat-based beverages is to get texture right and make sure that mouthfeel is spot-on.
