Recovered fiber usually has high levels of cellulosic fragments, microfines and loose fibrils. These increase the pulp's total surface area. A larger surface area means greater water absorption. That creates dewatering challenges in formation, pressing and drying. That's why processing recycled furnishes can be challenging.
