 Avoiding dead zones also improves contact between your substrates and microbial communities meaning higher yields. Better mixing also reduces separation and the resulting risk of crust formation. Hard crusts don't just reduce your working volume. Left unchecked, they can even break your mixers or cause your whole digester to fail.
