Biological catalysts to boost digester performance

Utilizing the hydrolytic effects of enzymes and beneficial properties of microbes, Novozymes can help you optimize your anaerobic sludge digestion.

Biological catalysts to boost digester performance

More biogas, less sludge, improved digester performance

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is at the heart of municipal sewage plants. This biological process relies on bacteria to convert organic matter into more stable substances. It is generally considered one of the most effective ways to reduce the weight and volume of sludge, while producing valuable biogas in the process.

Suboptimal digester performance can have a severe effect on both plant operations and economics. Poor removal of solids during AD significantly drives up downstream cost of disposal, while producing valuable biogas in the process.

What if there was a way to unlock the full potential of your digester, maximizing energy recovery and minimizing both sludge production and downstream cost of disposal?

There is. With biological solutions from Novozymes.

At Novozymes, we benefit from the power of enzymes and microbes in our applications for sludge digestion. Why? To make your operations more efficient and sustainable while saving energy, time and cutting operating costs.

How it works?

How it works?

Enzymes are proteins that act as catalysts. When one substance needs to be transformed into another, nature uses enzymes to speed up the process. This also applies to sludge digestion and biogas production, where added enzymes can speed up hydrolysis, or help breaking down hard-to-digest material.

A better organic conversion implies more biogas produced which can be used to either satisfy internal energy demand or sold externally. Similarly, a lower fraction of organic solids coming out of the digester also means a reduction in disposable sludge volumes after dewatering.

Finally, a lower fraction of organics generally implies a better dewatering performance (higher solids percentage in the dewatered sludge).
