What are GAGs?

If you’ve ever suffered achy joints, you probably know about joint-targeted supplements such as chondroitin sulfate, used to treat osteoarthritis. It’s one of the glycosaminoglycans, better known as GAGs.

GAGs have many applications. The most important GAGs commercially are hyaluronic acid, heparin and chondroitin sulfate. These are used in medical, veterinary, pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields. Heparin for example is used for blood clots, heart attacks and arthritis.

Extracting GAGs efficiently and sustainably with enzymes

GAGs are extracted from animal sources, such as lungs, skin and other tissues, and are released by either alkaline or enzymatic hydrolysis.

Using enzymes to extract GAGs has many advantages. Enzymatic extraction reduces costs, increases yields and results in cleaner GAGs. It’s also a much more sustainable process.

Reduce your costs and environmental footprint

Using enzymes for GAG extraction generates less residue than using chemicals. It significantly reduces the amount of water needed to remove undesirable by products.

Processors save money and water, and can avoid alkaline waste, which can affect aquatic and human health.
