From our recent study of more than 10,000 people across ten markets, we know that incomplete stain removal is a major issue for consumers. So it’s not surprising that 59% of consumers polled in a recent Nielsen report said they look for stain removal benefits when buying laundry detergent.

In another Nielsen report, 46% of consumers defined a premium product as one that offered superior function or performance. 42% said they’d be willing to pay more for such products. So high performance on stain removal could positively impact your brands’ price point.
Surfactants and enzymes in detergents
Surfactants play a key role in detergent performance by lowering the surface tension of the wash water so water and detergent can combine. That means the detergent can remove the stain. Enzymes are organic catalysts with a range of sustainability benefits. When added to detergent formulations, they catalyze the breakdown of stains into smaller pieces, so they’re easier for the detergent to remove.
Enzymes can partially replace surfactants
Because enzymes help to break down stains, they can partially replace surfactants in laundry detergent formulations, with no overall compromise on performance. On a few surfactant-sensitive stains, there may be a small impact on performance, but on most everyday stains that matter to consumers, there is an improvement. In internal tests, we added one of our multi-enzyme blends to a detergent with reduced surfactant concentration. Under our specific testing conditions, the enzymes more than compensated for the performance lost by reducing the surfactant, with no compromise on formulation costs.
